7a - Testing The Hypothesis - Teen Pregnancy

There is a huge problem in the United States and across the world where people are having children without having the ability to support them. This is most likely due to the fact that the parents are too young, possibly young enough to be considered children themselves. While there are no direct solutions to solving the world's problem of early pregnancy, there are ways that can make it easier for the new parents and the grandparents to cope with the situation. A potential way to help this issue is a guide written for parents whose children become pregnant early. This could help give them a better understanding of an unprecedented situation that they have come by. This guide may include how to talk to the teen/potential parent about their options, as that may be extremely difficult in that time. I spoke to 5 different people about this subject and the findings were quite interesting, and they changed the way I thought about this opportunity. One unexpected result was that they all talked about the idea of abortion and how it relates to the guide. One interviewee even said the guide can be titled, "how to convince your pregnant child to have an abortion." While this may be a little extreme, it showed me that there is an opportunity to sell information to parents in this desperate time. Another interviewee mentioned how relatively small a 20$ investment is compared to having to support a child that's not even yours. Because of these interviews, I realized that I may be more successful if I am more direct in my targeting strategy.

  1. Dear Griffin,

In general I really like your idea/opportunity. Not only in the US but also back in Germany where I am from we have the problem of teen pregnancy. I absolutely agree that there has to be improved guidance to that regard. Back home the middle/high school system works a bit different from here. We have 3 types of high and middle schools which have a different level of education. And indeed statistics show that teenagers from the lower education schools have more pregnancy issues and also earlier sexual interaction. Hence, I think that schools should already put more focus on showing the consequences of non protected sex. Moreover, I think that the scope of your problem is way larger. In my opinion the government should already intervene and set policies that enforce better and more information in regards to your topic.
In terms of the structure of this blog I would have wished for a clearer separation of the different parts of the assignment. It is really hard to follow which part is which in your post.

    Thank you,
    Viet

  2. Hey Griffin,
I really enjoy how this post really does feel like a blog post. This is post is really fluid compared to other post that can be really formulated. I also really liked how you incorporated your interviews into the post. I will say with the way you set it up it is hard to be able to hold you accountable for five different interviews. I do think you have a pressing issue to try and work with though and it will be interesting to see how you move forward with it, if you do.
